It combines a high resolution 640x512px thermal sensor with a built in laser rangefinder, a combination that often carries a steep price premium on other devices. In practice, this unit is aimed at serious hunters who need confident target identification at longer range along with fast distance measurement: ideal for stand hunting in open terrain or a nighttime stalk for wild boar.

The 12µm sensor with a resolution of 640 x 512 pixels delivers on its promise: outstanding sharpness. Even at long distances, reliable identification of game is possible. Not only the outline of an animal is clearly visible, but also fine details like individual blades of grass or the texture of vegetation in a field. The high sensitivity (NETD <15 mK) produces high contrast images even in difficult conditions like fog or light rain. A detection range of up to 3,540 meters underlines just how capable the sensor is.
Keep in mind that the sample images uploaded here are heavily compressed from being transferred to a phone. I would recommend everyone try looking through the unit itself in a store to really experience the high resolution.

The laser rangefinder (LIIR): brilliantly integrated and precise
One absolute highlight is the patented LIIR (Laser in IR). Because the laser beam travels the same path through the lens as the infrared radiation, there is no parallax error. Conotech developed and patented this principle, registering it as a utility model in Germany back in 2023 (DE 20 2023 103 202 U1, for anyone especially interested). That means wherever the center point of the image is, that is exactly where the distance gets measured: a major convenience in practice. Measurement is fast, reliable, and works without issue out to 1,200 meters. This integration is a game changer for quick, precise target assessment.

Handling and controls: thoughtful and built for hunting
Thanks to its robust yet ergonomic build, the unit sits securely in the hand. Controls are intuitive, with a small number of easily reachable dials and buttons. The tactile distinction between the rotary dial and push buttons stands out in particular, and it still works with gloves on. The OLED display impresses with deep blacks and high contrast. An automatic standby mode also helps preserve battery life. The app can mirror a live image from the camera, so more than one person can view the thermal feed at once. Recordings can also be viewed and copied to a phone through the app, and software updates are installed the same way.

Battery system: a genuine advantage. The unit has both a fixed internal battery and a swappable one (a standard 18500 cell, no proprietary system). This allows for a hot swap: the removable battery can be exchanged while the unit is running, since the internal battery keeps it powered. Forget the spare battery, and the unit still runs normally, just for a correspondingly shorter time.
The battery compartment doubles as a charger for 18500 cells - Built in storage: 32GB of internal storage means you can never forget an SD card, ruling out a common source of frustration.
- Build quality: from the sturdy carrying case to the tripod thread to the lens cap, which flips open and can also be locked firmly in place, everything is built for demanding daily use in the field. Glasses wearers are also well served thanks to the adjustable eyepiece.

What could be better: room for improvement on a few details
- Software and image transfer: probably the biggest criticism is that there is no way to view captured footage directly on the unit itself. That is only possible through the smartphone app. The Wi-Fi Direct connection is stable, but images and video are compressed during transfer to the phone, and exporting at full sensor resolution is not currently possible. That is fine for quick documentation, but a compromise for detailed analysis.
- Handling in the dark: the otherwise good ergonomics have two weak points. The housing does not offer enough differentiation between top and bottom, so in the dark it is easy to pick the unit up upside down by accident. The two buttons could also be a bit more distinguishable by feel, though that really is nitpicking at a high level.
- Small practical details: during extended use the unit gets noticeably warm, though never uncomfortably hot. The hanging loop is a bit too narrow for standard carabiners or typical lanyards.
Field check: an evening on the stand
How does the Aquilla 650 LIIR hold up in everyday hunting use? On the walk up to the stand, it stays protected in the backpack thanks to the sturdy case and lockable lens cap. In a dark stand, the tactile controls are an advantage. When an unclear shape appears at night, the camera is ready instantly. The high resolution quickly clarifies whether it’s game or a hare. The rangefinder delivers the exact distance within seconds for a well informed decision.

The Conotech Aquilla 650 LIIR is a genuine top of the range product that excels at its core functions: image quality and distance measurement. The combination of a 640 series sensor and a parallax free laser rangefinder is unmatched at this price point, making it a highly practical tool for serious property managers and hunters.
The criticized points (playback only through the app, compressed transfer) are mostly software related and could potentially be addressed with future updates. The minor ergonomic quirks are simply a matter of getting used to the device.
