First impression: thoughtful down to the details

The unboxing alone is convincing. The Avata 650 LIIR comes in a sturdy carrying case that reliably protects it from knocks and is also sized generously enough to fit the unit with its adapter (M52x0.75) screwed on. Picking it up for the first time shows: at 145 x 67 mm and just 450 grams, it’s pleasantly compact and light. A small but nice detail is the lens cap, which not only flips open but can also be locked in the open position, so it’s guaranteed not to accidentally flip back into the field of view.

The controls are minimalist and intuitive. The rugged three-position switch (off, standby, on) is the key to easy handling. Even with thick gloves on and in complete darkness, it’s easy to find by feel. A visual indicator confirming the unit is really switched off prevents a nasty surprise on the next hunting day.

The core strength: image quality and identification

Under the hood are high-end components: a 640 x 512 pixel sensor with a pixel size of just 12µm, and an NETD below 15 mK, deliver simply outstanding image quality. Resolution is high enough that even the finest details, like blades of grass, individual twigs, and the texture of tree bark, are clearly visible.

A note on the technology: anyone familiar with the outstanding image quality and performance of the Conotech Aquilla 650 LIIR handheld unit will feel right at home here. The Avata 650 LIIR shares the same high quality sensor and a very similar software platform, which explains the familiar, brilliant image and reliable performance.

In practice, that means: identifying game at distances where other devices only show a vague “something” becomes dramatically easier. Reliably distinguishing sex, for example with wild boar, is easily possible at hunting-relevant distances. The 50mm optics, with a field of view of 12 m x 15 m at 100 m, strike a good balance between overview and detail focus.

Keep in mind that the sample images uploaded here are compressed from being transferred to a phone. I would recommend everyone try looking through the unit itself in a store to really experience the high resolution.

The game-changing feature: the built-in laser rangefinder (LIIR)

This is where Conotech sets a genuine milestone. On the Avata 650 LIIR, the rangefinder isn’t mounted off to the side, it’s built directly into the optics (Laser in IR, a system invented and patented by Conotech, incidentally). The advantage is enormous: there’s no parallax error. Wherever you aim is exactly where the measurement happens. Estimating distance, something that takes a lot of experience and is prone to error, becomes unnecessary. That significantly increases safety when taking a shot, since the distance to the animal is determined in a split second and with total precision (up to 1,200 m). It’s simple and reliable to use.

Handling and flexibility in the field

The unit is extremely versatile. It can be used not just as a clip-on, but also as a handheld device, either directly or with a separately available, magnetically attachable eyepiece. Different weapon profiles can be saved and quickly switched between for use on different rifles. That makes lending it to hunting friends, or switching between your own rifles, effortless.

Zeroing reveals another advantage: each click shifts the point of impact by 19.5 mm at 100 m (0.67 MOA), allowing quick zeroing. In practice, only minor adjustment was needed to get the unit dialed in. Important: despite the theoretically possible zero stability, every clip-on device should still be zeroed!

Practical features for everyday hunting

  • Recoil-activated video recording: on firing, the unit automatically records 10 seconds before and 10 seconds after the shot. That’s invaluable for analyzing the shot, tracking the animal’s escape direction, or providing helpful information for a follow-up search.
  • Clever battery system: the built-in 64GB of storage makes SD cards unnecessary. The battery system runs on two standard 18500 cells, no proprietary system! Batteries are easy to find and easy to swap. Runtime of up to 7 hours is practical in the field, and fast charging (100% in 1 hour) saves the hunting day if you forget to charge it. The unit still works with just one battery in a pinch. Batteries can be charged either directly in the unit or in the removable battery compartment. Running it off an external power source, such as a power bank, is also possible.

Weaknesses: where is there room to improve?

No device is perfect, and the Avata 650 LIIR has two small weak points too:

  1. No on-device video playback: recorded videos can’t be played back directly on the unit. To review the footage, it first has to be transferred to a smartphone or computer. That’s a bit cumbersome, especially if you want to review the shot again, for a follow-up search for instance, but it works fine.
  2. Transfer not at full resolution: unfortunately, video transfer doesn’t happen at the sensor’s native resolution, but at a reduced quality. That’s a small drawback for detailed analysis on a bigger screen.

The clever design, with standardized batteries, recoil-activated recording, and flexible use, makes it a reliable partner for demanding hunters.

The minor trade-offs around direct video playback and transfer resolution weigh lightly against the outstanding performance in the field. Anyone who values safe identification, precise distance measurement, and a rugged, intuitive device will find one of the best partners currently on the market in the Avata 650 LIIR.

Recommendation: unreservedly recommended for hunters who don’t want to compromise on safety and image quality.
